Changing attitudes, changing life

Most of the time our attitudes are a direct response from our past experiences.  Some of these experiences are direct some are indirect.

For instance, lots of step- fathers rape their step-daughters or, conversely, a lot of step fathers don’t like their step- sons and, a lot of step- mothers  don’t like step- daughters.  It is a befuddling situation, if you ask me. Confusing,
is it not?

Unfortunately  today’s marriages don’t last that long.  Deaths, divorces, forced separations force marriages into decay and spouses then find new partners. This is when step-fathers and step-mothers come to the fore to the dismay of off-springs. Then life is turned topsy-turvy and then step- fathers and step- mothers take over.

As young person of today what are you going to do about the situation should it occur in your life? When your mom gets involved with another man or your dad with another woman what will be your reaction? Some of the people feel jealous, angry, and uncomfortable.

As a life skill facilitator I hear sob stories every now and then. Recently a girl of 20 shared her story with me.

She stays with step mother and her granny. She sleeps in her granny’s bedroom after moving out of her father’s main house.  The reason is that her step -mother despises her, she claims. Furthermore, she feels she is not welcomed into the main house, her step mother does not greet her and the step mother is a bad person.

I asked her a few questions. What do you do in the house as young girl? For example, do you do house chores?  She said nothing. I asked, do you greet your step mother? She said no. I then asked her, why are you telling me this story? I am looking for advice, she said. And this was my advice to her:  you have to behave like a daughter of your father and your step-mother, you must clean the floor, sweep the yard and when your step mother is doing something that you think you can help her with then you must avail yourself to help like you will do to your biological mom. I then implored her to try this for two weeks and then report back to me how it’s going. Guess what, after those two weeks there was a positive response from her step- mother.

Sometimes we blame others about bad situations while the cause to all the trouble is our own attitude. So if we were to do a little introspection before howling from the hilltop and apply changes where applicable to alter our attitude then we can enjoy life and make the world a better place.

We must understand that our behaviour comes from the attitude we have. Because some children have experience bad things with their step-mothers and step-fathers it does not mean that all people are like that; we must learn to give others a chance to prove themselves.

MUSIC, DANCE: THELANE THEATER PRODUCTIONS

Thelane Theatre Productions is an initiative by young and robust artists from Daveyton (Ekurhuleni East).

Thelane Theatre Productions was formed in 2007 by its chairman Neo Maje, with the purpose to create sustainable development within the art community. With the aim to change and uplift the standard of arts in Daveyton and surrounding areas, train and nourish youth to become better and disciplined citizens and/or artists with responsibility and dignity, also to offer leadership skills within the Dance, Music and Drama arena.

It was not an easy decision to pursue this organization as it is almost not possible without funds, to maintain such an Organization, but as we are a family, we share similar objectives we have developed and attain most objectives. The Organization has developed immensely.

We are proud as an Organization to hold a Daveyton flag up, as we have managed to secure and build strong relationships with local and international clients. Through discipline and dedication we strive to change the mentality that today’s youth is a generation with no aspirations, we can boast that we have outreach programs that are doing amicably well and attained some awards!

Thelane is proudly to have expanded to nearby Townships like Etwatwa, and areas of Pretoria, under the watchful  eye of the very talented Themba Mathabela (artistic director) and Bheki Ndlanyisa, our music director.

GDE shines at Batho Pele Excellence Awards

The Head of the Gauteng Department of Education Mr Boy Ngobeni has been recognised as the best Head of Department (HOD) in the country.

Ngobeni received this award at the National Batho Pele Excellence Awards on Saturday (15 November 2014).

The National Batho Pele Excellence are held annually by the Department of Public Service and Administration to acknowledge and reward excellence in the public service and make sure it matures to greater heights

Ngobeni was awarded the best Head of Department for demonstrating exceptional leadership skills/expertise with a proven track record of leadership and successfully achieving the overall strategic goals of the department.

In 2007, Ngobeni was also acknowledged for his contribution to e-government when he won the Premier’s Award for Service Excellence for the innovation of a tool that allows citizens to apply for jobs via cellphone technology

Boy Ngobeni
He joined the Gauteng Department of Education as Acting Deputy Director General (DDG) for Corporate Services, while simultaneously heading the Gauteng City Region Academy, an agency responsible for skills development within the Gauteng Provincial Government.

He was appointed as the Head of the Department in 2010.  Since his appointment the department has seen successive improvements in the matric results and the improvement in literacy and numeracy as per the indication of the ANA tests.

Mr Ngobeni also presided over the implementation of the Gauteng Primary Literacy and Mathematics Strategy, which focused on literacy levels at primary schools.  This strategy saw the literacy gap between resourced schools and underperforming schools narrow significantly

In congratulating Ngobeni, the Gauteng MEC for Education  Panyaza Lesufi said that it is Mr Ngobeni’s distinctive leadership qualities and tireless energy that earned him the award.  “We are indeed privileged as a province and as the department to have Ngobeni as the HOD.  His leadership skills are reflected in the department’ many successful stories” said Lesufi.

Lesufi shocked at double standards on corruption

The Gauteng Department of Education has noted with concern reports that suggest that the efforts aimed at rooting out corruption and maladministration are a waste of money. The Star newspaper reports today that the Department has “blown millions on audits”. This article is based on a response provided by the MEC for Education, Mr Panyaza Lesufi on 15 September 2014. The questions were in relation to forensic audits conducted at schools.

Forensic audits are instruments used to deal with misuse of public funds and corruption. The work of the Department in this regard needs to be seen in the context that the Department has a responsibility to investigate any allegations of corruption or mismanagement that comes to its attention through various channels, including whistle blowing; the Presidential and Premier’s hotlines as well as the anti-corruption hotline. Various pieces of legislation oblige the Department directly or indirectly to investigate, take action, and put in place controls to ensure financial prudence in the management of public funds.

The Department allocates money to schools to fund curriculum delivery. It therefore has a statutory obligation to ensure that these funds are spent as intended by the Public Finance Management Act with good governance and accountability. Lesufi expressed disappointment with  seems to be double standards on corruption. “it is unfortunate that the Democratic Alliance are the ones complaining about a process aimed at strengthening accountability, transparency, and financial prudence”, he said.

“Over and above this exercise being a statutory obligation, the investigations are done in the spirit of protecting the tax payers money”, said the MEC.

The MEC also emphasised that the Department commitment to clean governance at schools and has put in place a number programmes of to improve the financial maturity framework at school level. The Department has mentoring and coaching programmes provided on financial management through the Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance to School Governing Bodies. The Department is currently finalising regulations to standardise financial reporting for schools. The department also conducts regular impact assessments of the training provided by evaluating schools on particular financial indicators.

In his response to the Legislature,Lesufi indicated that the Department had conducted forensic audits at less than 1% of its schools per annum.  Appropriate action has been taken where necessary and if supported by sufficient evidence against perpetrators. Over this period the Department has taken disciplinary action, opened civil cases, and reported perpetrators to the South African Revenue Services where investigations reveal non-disclosure of extra remunerative work. Where SGBs fail their fiduciary responsibilities the Department makes informed decisions in line with the provisions of the South African Schools Act.

With regard to Glenvista High school, there were allegations of mismanagement reported by a whistle-blower. The allegations were investigated; new allegations were raised by the same whistle-blower and are currently being investigated.  In the case of Brakpan High an investigation was conducted and feedback was provided to the SGB which included a report on their own conduct. The SGB was disbanded and action is being taken against officials.

The Democratic Alliance has also requested the Department to provide the actual reports all forensic investigations conducted in the past 5 years including minutes of meetings and registers of attendance. The challenge with this request  is that the Department would have to print an estimated 20 000 pages, with the whole staff complement of the responsible section taking out three weeks of normal work that would have to be delayed to print, package and bind this report. This would also imply that the Department would fail its whistle blowing policy by disclosing the names and details of whistle blowers and third parties. This will open the Department to litigation. In the context of the article alleging wastage of money by the Department, this exercise would ironically to lead to incurring more costs.

From the above it is clear that neither Lesufi nor the Department has protected fraudsters and corrupt officials. “We are committed to clean governance, transparency, and oversight and we will comply with any request that will not have an adverse effect on service delivery and the provision of quality education to all learners in Gauteng”  Lesufi said.
