Registration deadline looms: Supplementary exams registrations closes today

The Gauteng Department of Education reminds learners who wish to register for supplementary examination that the deadline for registration for the class of 2014 closes today.

The examinations will take place from 16 February 2015 to 24 March 2015 and the results will be released on 30 April 2015

Learners who wish to register for these exams may do so by registering at a District Office closest to where they reside. The district office will advise the candidate on a centre closest to where the candidate resides which provides support to learners.

The following conditions apply for entry as per the regulations governing the supplementary examination:

·         If a learner has not met the minimum promotion and certification requirements in the final external examination, but requires a maximum of two subjects to obtain the National Senior Certificate, he or she may register for a maximum of two subjects for the supplementary examination in the year following the final external examination.
·         These two subjects must be subjects that the learner sat for in the previous end of year examination.
·         If a learner is medically unfit and as a result, was absent from one or more external examination, he or she may register for the supplementary examination.
·         If there is a death in the immediate family of a learner, or other special reasons for the candidate’s absence, he or she may register for the supplementary examination.
·         A learner who provides documentary evidence that he or she qualifies for admission to a higher education institution or for an occupation, but does not satisfy the higher education faculty requirements or the requirements for the specific occupation, as well as a learner who is one requirement short in meeting the minimum admission requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor’s degree programme, may be allowed to register for a maximum of two subject.
·         In a case where an irregularity is being investigated, provisional enrolment for the supplementary examination may be granted to the learner concerned, pending the outcome of the investigation.

·         A candidate who was unable to write or complete one or more of the National Senior Certificate examination question papers for reasons other than illness or injury may apply to write the supplementary examination, provided that a written report is submitted by the principal of the school to the Head of the assessment body.

Death on the playing fields in Gauteng: Learner dies on school play ground

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is deeply saddened by the passing away of a Grade R learner from Welomlambo Primary School in Tembisa.

The learner sustained injuries while playing with other learners in the school’s playground.  Emergency personnel were called to the school but, sadly, the learner was declared dead on the scene.

Officials from the department have been called to the school to provide necessary support and counselling to educators and learners.  Counselling will also be extended to the family of the learner.

Panyaza Lesufi, the MEC for education in Gauteng, expressed shock at this incident and sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of the learner and the entire school community of school.  “It is indeed a very sad day for us," Lesufi said, "to hear about the passing on of a young learner, whose future looked bright and showed promises of a better life for his family, community and the country at large.  No words are sufficient enough to express our sorrow.  We wish the family of the learner peace and comfort during this difficult time and hope that they find solace in the knowledge that we too share their loss,” he added.

School racism in Gauteng :Gautenf education to probe racism at schools

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is concerned about reports that learners at Curro Roodeplaat are being placed in a racially segregated manner at the school.
The department has indicated that it views this matter in a very serious light and if indeed these allegations are true, it condemns such conduct in the strongest terms.
It added that, "There is absolutely no room for racism in any school, including independent schools."

The department will send officials to the school to ascertain what happened, how it happened, who was involved and what appropriate steps should be taken.
