Sci-Bono offers kids of all ages the chance to get their hands dirty and explore the wonders of science through hands-on, interactive workshops. Book one of the following workshops for your school visit during the first term:
- My First Chemistry Class (Grade 1-3): Enjoy this selection of fun and engaging chemistry experiments. Learn about density, the properties of air, basic chemical reactions and more. Experience chemistry come to life and discover the excitement of being a chemist.
- Peanut Power (Grade 4 – 6): How much energy is in a peanut? Discover how you can release the potential energy stored in a peanut to heat a container of water. It’s all about energy conversion and transfer!
- The Truth about Vitamins (Grade 4-6): Do apples have more vitamin C than bananas? Test different types of fruits and compare their vitamin C content while exploring the importance of vitamin C in our diet.
- Does Matter Matter? (Grade 4-6): What makes matter useful? Explore the properties of different materials to determine their usefulness for particular applications. Students will also investigate various methods to separate mixtures.
- Polymer Science (Grade 7-9): What makes a polymer special? And what do we use them for? Find out this and more as we explore the world of Polymers. Students will learn about the process of Polymerization and get to synthesize their own polymer.
- Acid Mine Drainage (Grade 7-9): Explore acids and bases using various indicators and learn about Acid Mine Drainage. What is it, how does it form and what impact does it have on our environment?

The Light Side of Life (Grade 4 -12): In celebration of the International Year of Light and Light Based Technologies we explore the properties of light and waves. This scintillating science show will unravel the mysteries of light through a collection of exciting demonstrations which explore, amongst others, fluorescence, lasers and the electromagnetic spectrum.

Sci-Bono hosts a series of annual focus weeks, each designed to highlight opportunities and innovation in critical sectors of the South African economy. The week long expos include exhibitions, workshops, lectures and presentations and are supported by stakeholders from industry, government, research councils and educational institutions. Learners are able to interact with professionals and find out first-hand about exciting career opportunities while learning more about bursaries, learnerships and admissions into Higher Education Institutions. |

Enquiring Minds Programme (Grade 1 – 3) Become an enquiring mind. This programme themed on discovering science, will introduce foundation phase learners to fun and engaging science experiments and activities. It will run from 26 January to 25 February.

The BHP Billiton Career Centre @ Sci-Bono is a career guidance centre providing career counselling workshops & psychometric assessments for school learners. Assessments will start in February.

Dr. Graham Walker presents Science Circus for the first time in Africa
Join us at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre as we play host to Dr. Graham Walker for a not to be missed science show! Dr Walker has been performing science shows for the past 14 years and is one of only two people in the world with a PhD in science show performance. His unique brand of high-energy delivery and amazing science regularly thrills audiences around the world. In 2015 Dr Walker returns with a unique show titled Science Circus. Dr Walker will be in SA FROM May – July (exact dates to be confirmed). Schools are urged to book now as seats are limited. |

Meet the people behind the science with Sci-Bono’s monthly Speak2aScientist programme:o Interact with local and international scientists;
- Interact with local and international scientists;
- Keep abreast of current science and technology;
- Participate in topical science debates.
Suitable for audiences ages 15 and up, the Speak2aScientist events provide an informal platform for the public to engage with science and relevant scientific research. Please note that all the talks are FREE. Speak2aScientist takes place on the last Thursday evening of the month, 18h00 for 18h30 and lasts until 20h30.
Free, safe and well lit parking is available directly in front of the building and the coffee shop is open for light refreshments prior to the event.
