FASHION DESIGN. Designers create jobs

Getting a job and making a living ”After leaving school I had nothing to do then I decided to start designing a clothing label”, said Nkululeko. They then started to design a clothing label which they were launching last year. These up and coming designers said not finding jobs didn’t discourage them in anyway; rather it helped them do something constructive for themselves. These young men from Vosloorus are working with other vibrant designers like themselves and are doing other great things apart designing. Nkululeko is a film maker and a rapper, Given is a hip-hop dancer, Brian works as a Airhostess at South African Airways SAA and Mduduzi works at Heineken and is also a film maker.

They said their clothing label has been doing well for them because they make a living through it as they don’t have a paying job. They design T-shirts, caps and golf caps, headphones and bags for both males and females. According to Nkululeko designing comes natural to him and most of the things he does are self taught. “I love designing so much that I didn’t need to go to school and get a qualification for ii, I just taught myself’, he said. Within their label they have two brands, ModaNature, which was started in 2001 and was initiated by Nkululeko Shezi and BrIan Monapule and Asscom which was started by Given Mabanga, Nkululeko Shezi and Mduduzi Miya in 2011. Showcasing at the Divali and entering the Alberton Fashion week were some of their greatest achievements and they got a lot of support from the community.

Given said “would be great if we could have a street fashion show where we will show case our products, change themes on a monthly basis and do shows every month as well”. In future they would like to have their own shop, merge with other labels and distribute for other shops as well. They are planning on working with other designers from Katlehong who already have their own labels: K1 Kats and G-spot.
